These areas include the forehead, and around the eyes. Additional uses for this treatment include areas around the nose “bunny lines,” upper lip area for vertical lip lines, chin for “peau d’orange” or stippling of the chin skin, and masseter or jawline slimming. Botox and Dysport may also be used in the neck for banding that may develop as well as for the “Nefertiti Neck Lift.” Micro or meso Botox may also be used for skin resurfacing and to improve skin texture and appearance throughout the face and neck.

How it Works

Botox (onabotulinum toxin A) and Dysport (abobotulinum toxin A) are two of the leading injectable wrinkle treatment options (differing only in the complexing proteins used during manufacturing) made up of a purified chemical called botulinum toxin. By blocking muscular signals that cause facial muscles to contract, Botox & Dysport injections temporarily weaken the muscles and stop them from contracting, ultimately reducing the appearance of expression lines. This process eases facial wrinkles significantly, either improving them or erasing them altogether for about 3-4 months at a time.

Other muscles of the face that are not treated by neurotoxin injection remain unaffected, allowing you to freely show facial expressions.

There is no downtime associated with the procedure but patients are encouraged to avoid exercise immediately following to prevent development of any delayed bruising (that if occurs, is minimal). Results should be visible after a few days and typically last 3-5 months depending on the neurotoxin used and the amount. You should wait at least ninety days between Dysport or Botox treatments.

Am I a Candidate?

Men and women who are interested in reducing facial wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions non-surgically are good candidates for Botox and Dysport. These neurotoxin injections do not require an allergy test, virtually everyone in good health is a candidate for this safe and reliable treatment.

Although Botox is usually associated with older men and women who would like to get rid of their wrinkles, it may also be utilized on a preventive basis to help younger patients prevent these lines from developing in the first place.

It’s important to note that Botox or Dysport should not be given to individuals who are pregnant or nursing, have a neuromuscular disease, or are taking aminoglycoside medications such as Streptomycin or Neomycin.

Procedure Details & Expected Results

During a consultation with Dr. Moses, once determining your candidacy and appropriateness for Botox or Dysport, she will evaluate your fine lines and wrinkles in order to identify the specific injection sites and techniques that will minimize their appearance and help you achieve your desired aesthetic.

Once the areas to be injected are identified, she will inject the medication into the facial muscles to reduce muscle contraction and soften wrinkles. The injection has a similar sensation as a pinch or bee sting when the needle enters the skin but do not typically hurt. A very fine needle is used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Although most patients do not need a topical anesthetic, it is an option for those who are concerned about discomfort.

Botox and Dysport treatments are fairly quick and usually completed in 15 to 30 minutes. Some patients even choose to undergo their treatment during their lunch break and head back to the office afterward as there is no downtime associated with the procedure. You can resume the majority of your everyday activities immediately after injection. However, Dr. Moses does suggest staying away from vigorous physical activity for 24 hours following the treatment

Expected Results

Rest assured, Dr. Moses is an experienced injector and aims to treat the lines and wrinkles yet maintain expression in the face. Some patients fear that they will be unable to move their face, will appear asymmetric or “frozen.” When performed correctly, you should still be able to move your eyebrows, forehead and express yourself. While some individuals prefer certain areas to exhibit no movement, such as the forehead, this is at the discretion of the patient and their desired aesthetic. Dr. Moses prefers to preserve varying degrees of movement and allow continued yet softer facial expression in certain areas in order to maintain a natural look. By creating a customized treatment plan, focused on the individual’s area(s) of concern, movement may be decreased, stabilized or obviated.

The results of the injections are not a permanent. Individual results vary in terms of duration of effect. In order to maintain the desired result, repeat injections are recommended at consistent intervals. Age and lifestyle as well as overall skin health play a role in the longevity of your result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes these lines or “dynamic wrinkles”?

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport were developed to treat dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form because of the repetitive use of facial muscles as well as due to factors including genetics, smoking, sun exposure, and natural aging.

Are Botox and Dysport safe?

Both neurotoxin medications are backed by the FDA and one of the safest and most tested drugs in medicine. Millions of Botox and Dysport injections are performed in the United States each year. It is a purified protein that contains no live bacteria and no allergy testing is required.

How do these medications differ from other injectables, like dermal fillers?

Botox is performed to temporarily treat and improve the appearance of wrinkles that are the result of overactive facial muscles. Other injectable dermal fillers are intended to actually fill in and reduce wrinkles that are caused by the loss of facial volume and collagen.

Will wrinkles worsen once the Botox has worn off?

If injections are stopped temporarily or indefinitely, the wrinkles will not worsen. In the event injections are discontinued, your face will slowly return to a similar appearance as it did when treatments were initiated.

Are there side effects?

There may be redness or a small amount of swelling at the injection site that dissipates in less than 30 minutes. Rare and temporary side effects of Botox or Dysport include redness, bruising, headache or flu-like symptoms. Since injecting these medications into the incorrect place can lead to temporary eyelid droop or eyebrow droop in addition to overall asymmetry, it’s imperative to seek treatment from an experienced specialist.
