SKIN RESURFACING

Microneedling

Are you bothered by skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, brown spots, acne scarring, or dull skin? If you are interested in smooth, more dewy, glowing skin with minimized skin imperfections, microneedling is an in-office procedure that can rejuvenate your skin and smooth these imperfections.

Microneedling is a type of collagen induction therapy that creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to stimulate the body’s natural healing, which in turn activates collagen and elastin formation, reversing signs of aging and promoting healthier, smoother skin.

As we age, our body’s natural level of collagen production decreases and the amount of elastin in our skin diminishes. Through microneedling we take advantage of our skin’s natural wound healing properties and elicit a dramatic increase in production of these two key support structures for our skin. The result is:

  • Reduction in fine lines & wrinkles
  • More even skin tone & texture
  • Markedly diminished brown spots or sun spots
  • Repair of visible scars
  • Reversal of sun damage & pigmentation
  • Decreased pore size
  • Increased efficacy of skin care products

At Palmetto Facial Plastics, we utilize Skin Pen by Bellus Medical which is the world’s first FDA cleared microneedling device. Am I a Candidate?

Microneedling candidates are generally healthy men and women with concerns regarding the texture and appearance of the skin on the face, neck and/or decollete. Microneedling is one of the few skin resurfacing procedures that is safe on all skin types and colors (Fitzpatrick I-VI). It is reserved for patients without significant comorbid medical conditions as well. Active skin infection at the time of scheduled treatment will result in rescheduling due to patient safety concerns. For those individuals with specific skin concerns, such as sensitive skin, at the time of consultation Dr. Moses will ensure that these issues are addressed and a plan is formulated accordingly.

Expected Results

Expected results include visible improvement for a number of concerns:

  • Reduction in fine lines & wrinkles
  • More even skin tone & texture
  • Markedly diminished brown spots or sun spots
  • Repair of visible scars
  • Reversal of sun damage & pigmentation
  • Decreased pore size
  • Increased efficacy of skin care products

Initial results appear approximately 3-7 days following the procedure and continue to improve for up to 6 months as additional collagen is created and new skin architecture is laid down. Final results include:

  1. An improvement in skin tone, texture, firmness & overall appearance
  2. A natural dewy, well-hydrated glow to the skin
  3. A reduction in the appearance of visible signs of aging, sun damage, large pores, scarring

Results are further maximized by adhering to a post procedural skin care regimen. Additionally, through a series of treatments, results are further compounded and truly provide patients with a rejuvenated, refreshed appearance.

The Procedure

Microneedling is performed in the office by Dr. Moses herself or a licensed aesthetician. It may be performed on the face, neck, décolleté, amongst others. Prior to the start of the procedure, a thin layer of topical anesthetic gel is applied to clean skin. After sufficient time, this is removed, and the face is then cleaned again. The microneedling pen settings are also adjusted specific to the patient as well as the areas being treated. The pen is the gently pressed against the surface of the skin and is then gently glided over the treatment area(s). The microscopic channels that it creates stimulates the healing process, culminating in increased collagen and elastin production. Total time for the procedure depends on the treatment area and on average lasts about 30 minutes. Results are optimized by completing a series of 3 treatments over 4-6 week intervals.

The Post Procedural Period & Recovery

Following the procedure, patients may experience some pink or redness to the skin, which is expected. Patients are instructed to wash the area with tepid water and then dry it with a clean cloth for the first two days. Refrain from using makeup, retinoid, glycolic acids, Vitamin C products, and sunscreen for 24 hours following each treatment. Patients should also avoid direct sun exposure, swimming, and strenuous exercise for at least 24 – 36 hours.
